Definitions

Service Engagement is any endeavor that brings the community into the campus and the campus into the community, reciprocally, often addressing a social concern. It could include service-learning, co-curricular community service, and volunteerism. It could also include some internships and field experiences. Ultimately, the sum of these activities leads to a campus that is fully engaged with the community. (Jamison and McCracken, 2007).  Adapted by Indiana Campus Compact from the definition of “Civic Engagement” provided by the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse.

Service Learning is a pedagogy that faulty use to incorporate service into their courses.  Students benefit by experiential learning and reflection and the community benefits through the students’ service.  Robert Bringle and Julie Hatcher define service learning as "credit-bearing educational experience in which students (a) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs, and (b) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of curricular content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of personal values and civic responsibility " (Bringle and Hatcher, 1996).
